Aluminum company leases former Stimson mill site
MISSOULA, Mont. - A manufacturing company from Maine is moving into the old Stimson mill site in Bonner, a move the company says will create up to 200 new jobs.
Alcom LLC (Aluminum Company of Maine) was founded in 2006, and has grown to employ 200 people.
The company specializes in producing hand built aluminum trailers. The owners hope the expansion into Bonner will help lower shipping costs.
Missoula Economic Development CEO James Grunke said the expansion represents is a victory for those who want to see more manufacturing jobs created in Montana.
He said he believes Missoula has the ability to absorb up to 1000 jobs in manufacturing.
"I think it was just the access local leaders, and it was also the availability of the work force," said Grunke, on the Alcom's decision to move to Missoula County. "It always comes down to if can we have the workforce to meet their needs. (Alcom) is coming from a similar community, with a similar culture - they like that, but it really speaks to the openness of this community."
Grunke said Alcom will hire 60 workers initially, and production is slated to start early next year.
