Woman pleads no contest to running over officer

MISSOULA, Mont. - A Missoula woman charged with backing over a police officer while trying to evade arrest on a probation violation has pleaded no contest to assault with a weapon. The Missoulian reports 47-year-old Dawnette Eaton told District Judge Karen Townsend on Tuesday that she was impaired by drug use and doesn't remember hitting Officer Deni Poling in a fast-food restaurant parking lot on Jan. 7. Poling suffered serious injuries that required surgery. Lt. Rich Stepper fired a shot at Eaton's car as she drove off, hitting Eaton in the arm. Eaton pleaded guilty to fleeing the scene of an injury accident. Deputy Missoula County Attorney Jason Marks says he will recommend a 30-year prison sentence when she is sentenced on Oct. 22. Eaton remains jailed.
