Cherry has breakout performance in NBA Summer League

MISSOULA, Mont. - The biggest headline in the NBA last week was the decision by Lebron James to return back to the Cleveland Cavaliers. One of the biggest headlines for the Cleveland Cavaliers team this week, was a summer league breakout performance by a former Montana Grizzly star. Former UM point guard Will Cherry is competing for the Cavaliers Summer League team. On Sunday it was Cherry who led his Cleveland squad to an 82-70 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Cherry was dazzling on the offensive end of the floor as he used to be back in Missoula's Dahlberg Arena. The former Griz star scored 21 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. In fact at one point late in the game, Cherry scored 14 straight points for the Cavaliers. He finished the game hitting 9-of-12 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. "I want to say I was in the zone for a minute, especially after I hit the buzzer beater three," said Cherry. "You know, all I was seeing was gold after that and I couldn't get out of that zone after that."

Cherry is considered a long shot to make the Cleveland Cavaliers roster following Summer League action, but if the Oakland native continues to play at this level it seems the Cavs would have no choice but to give him a chance. Last season Cherry played for the Cavaliers' D-League team, the Canton Charge. He averaged over 13 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds per game for Canton.
