Closures, delays scheduled for Orange Street roundabout project

MISSOULA, Mont. - Knife River Corporation say construction crews will begin to put the final touches on the Orange Street roundabout.

North Third Street will still remain closed for at least a couple more weeks until the construction is complete.

On Monday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the Orange Street exit for east and westbound traffic on I-90 will be closed, as well as the roundabout. Both will reopen Tuesday morning.

Throughout the week, Knife River will complete the crossing of the new water line at the intersection of Orange and Third Street. Grading work will continue on the eastbound on and off ramp and the grading work on the north side of Orange Street where the westbound ramps join.

On Tuesday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Orange Street traffic will be detoured around the work site. Knife River official say if grading work is not complete by Monday night, work will still continue on the eastbound on and off ramps.

On Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. traffic will still be detoured. The storm structure will be completed.

Work will continue on the storm pipping and structures on Thrid Street on Thursday and Friday nights.

NBC Montana talked to Knife River officials when construction began on the rounabout mid-April. Officials predicted it would be complete by the end of May.

Missoula resident Peter Miller says workers not meeting the deadline is frustrating, but thinks the new roundabout is worth the wait.

"It increases the speed of the flow. It stops jams," Miller said. "I think it's a good thing even though it's taking the extra time to get finished - it will be a great addition to the city."

Officials say the roundabout will be compelted sometime in June.
