Gallatin County commissioners deny seaplane permit

BOZEMAN, Mont. - The Gallatin County Planning and Zoning Commission denied Yellowstone Seaplanes' request for a conditional use permit Thursday.

The commercial seaplane company planned to operate out of Kirkwood Marina on Hebgen Lake near Yellowstone. The permit would have taken effect May 2018, lasting three years.

Yellowstone Seaplanes would have taken passengers on a tour through the area, operating from May to October, seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

About 100 neighbors attended a meeting at the Holiday Inn to voice their concerns over the company.

Residents were worried the company would jeopardize the safety of boaters and kayakers, and that the noise levels would be disruptive.

"He is offering 30-minutes, one-hour and two-hour flights, which means we would be bombarded by noise and the problems that come with that," Lyndy Caine, a local business owner, said.

Lauren Dewit, the applicant-owner of Yellowstone Seaplanes, told NBC Montana he feels he was shut down from the beginning.

"It was a very scientific approach to it, but it was lost on all the public that showed up and were unopen to hear my information," Dewit said.
