BOZEMAN, Mont. - Gov. Steve Bullock announced a $3 million investment Tuesday to expand preschool programs across the state.

The announcement marks the state's first-ever investment in publicly funded preschool. The funding, included in House Bill 639, has helped to create the STARS pilot preschool grant program.

Public and private preschools, Head Start schools, community-based programs, military programs and tribal programs and classrooms will now be able to apply for competitive grants, which are worth up to $150,000 per classroom.

The program aims to make preschool more affordable and will help schools across the state accommodate more students. According to Marissa Perry, the governor's press secretary, the grants will be especially helpful to schools that serve low-income families.

Applications for funding must be submitted by 5 p.m. July 10.
