Jefferson Co. prepares for flooding

WHITEHALL, Mont. - Jefferson County officials prepared Tuesday for flooding possible in the next 48 hours on the Jefferson River in Whitehall.

The river runs through Madison and Jefferson counties.

County officials have made sand and sandbags available to residents as a precaution.

County Commissioner Leonard Wortman told NBC Montana road supervisors sent out crews Tuesday morning to see if rising waters caused damage to any roads in Whitehall.

"When the water's crossing the road, you know, it may only be a couple of inches, but then it also could eat underneath and cause a big sinkhole," Wortman said. "If someone drove into it, it might look safe, but everything might cave in."

Wortman encouraged residents to watch out for the sloughs that come off the Jefferson River.
