Missoula Co. appoints interim clerk, changes elections position

MISSOULA, Mont. - Missoula County Commissioners appointed an interim clerk and recorder/treasurer.

Current Chief Deputy Treasurer Kim Seeberger will take over Monday, as Vickie Zeier has transitioned to County Chief Administrative Officer.

Seeberger will fulfill the job through the end of the year. Later this month Missoula County Democrats will select a name for the job for November ballot.

In addition to the interim appointment, commissioners have decided to make the elections administrator portion of the job a separate appointment.

Zeier had done all of the duties for the last 21 years.

Commissioners have yet to lay out a time line, but plan to discuss how the appointment will work next week. The person will serve a 3-year term.

Zeier said, "If you're clerk and recorder/treasurer and you do the election duties it is a full plate. I believe by making this an appointed position we can hire for the position and we can start doing some succession training."

Some Missoula County leaders disagree. "Accountability is something that's so important for the people in Missoula County. They've been very, very clear that this is not the way that they want to go forward," said State Rep. Bryce Bennett (D-Missoula). "I don't understand why the commissioners went this direction and I hope that they'll reconsider their actions."

The appointed position would be on a trial basis and commissioners will re-evaluate the position toward the end of the term.
