Missoula snags 'Playful City USA' award for ninth year

MISSOULA, Mont. - Missoula is being recognized by a national nonprofit for helping kids stay active.

The city is one of more than 200 nationwide snagging the 2017 Playful City USA award. In fact, it's the ninth win for Missoula.

Nonprofit KaBoom! helps cities keep kids active, whether it's at the local playground or through summer sports programs.

Its mission is especially important during the summer months, according to manager of City Engagement for KaBoom! Maggie Cooper.

Cooper said it's because recess will no longer be a part of many kids' daily routines.

"Kids just play less now than previous generations," she said. "We also know that one in four kids gets the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. We also know that one in five children are growing up in poverty in our country."

Besides Missoula, Alberton and Superior also picked up the designation.
