Possible burial ground discovered at SW Montana campground
ANACONDA, Mont. - A viewer tipped NBC Montana off Wednesday afternoon that Anaconda police are searching an area near Anaconda, where a camper found a jawbone.
Anaconda Police Chief Tim Barkell said the camper discovered the jawbone Tuesday night at the Warm Springs Creek Campground, near mile marker 19 off Highway 1 West.
Police and a medical examiner were called to the scene, and also found ribs in the dirt.
Barkell said he believes the site may be an old settler or tribal burial ground.
He thinks the remains are just now being uncovered because plow and road grading crews disrupted the bank on the side of the road where they were buried.
The Montana Historical Society has taken over the scene, Barkell said, and will run tests to determine how old the bones are.
