Ravalli Co. Attorney issues statement on treasurer investigation
HAMILTON, Mont. - The following is a statement was released by the Ravalli County Attorney:
Attached to this statement (click here to read the full statement) is a status report on the independent examination of the Ravalli County Treasurer's Office, delivered today by audit team leader James Woy, CPA. It is my hope that the transparency of this independent audit will assure our taxpaying citizens that all monies are being properly accounted for. There is a great amount of hard work being done, and I appreciate the patience of all as this sizable task moves forward.
Further, the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation has informed us that they will await the independent audit results before they will consider an investigation. However, due to the number and type of allegations of criminal and civil misconduct that recently have been made by Ms Stamey and others, I believe that a broader independent investigation remains necessary.
I am pleased to announce that (retired) District Court Judge Nels Swandal is conducting that independent investigation. Judge Swandal recently retired from the bench after 18 years as the District Court Judge in Park and Sweet Grass Counties, prior to which he served for 12 years as the Park County Attorney. Judge Swandal is also retired from the U S Army JAG Corps, after 30 years of active and reserve duty with the US Army, Army Reserves and Montana National Guard.
While I cannot comment further on the ongoing investigation, I will provide any information I can as it becomes available on the progress of the audit team and the findings of the independent investigation.
