MISSOULA, Mont. - Russell Street southbound lanes have been reopened after a high-speed chase ended around North Avenue and Russell.

Missoula County Sheriff's Office says the incident began at the Missoula airport, where the suspect stole a vehicle. Public Information Officer Brenda Bassett says the suspect drove the vehicle to Allied Waste to dump garbage but left without paying for it.

Bassett says Allied Waste called 911 with a vehicle description. Bassett says officers located the vehicle near the Reserve Street on-ramp and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle refused to yield and a chase ensued just after 8 a.m.

Bassett says the suspect vehicle began traveling at high speeds down Orange Street and Stephens Avenue. Missoula Police Department deployed stop sticks near Stephens Avenue and Mount Avenue.

The vehicle crashed near Russell Street and North Avenue, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Witnesses told our reporter on scene the suspect was taken from the vehicle at gunpoint.

Russell Street reopened just after 9 a.m.
