Salish Kootenai College receives NASA grant


KALISPELL, Mont. - Salish Kootenai College in Pablo is getting a grant from NASA. The school is one of four tribal colleges that will be receive a grant from NASA.

The grants range in amount from $413,000 to $1,009,000. Salish Kootenai College will receive just over $1 million. It will go toward improving teaching and learning at the school, on the subject of global climate change.

"We'll have an opportunity for three years to look at these issues carefully and develop an education project around it, where we balance traditional cultural ways of knowing and understanding with the very best science and technology," said Germaine White, the Information and Education Specialist for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT).

White tells us that the grant also allows for a partnership between the college and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The college will be able to send two interns to the lab a year as well as have scientists from the lab visit the school.

The three other schools that received grants are College of Menominee Nations in Wisconsin, Turtle Mountain Community College in North Dakota and the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Minnesota.
