Veteran's remains returned to family

BOZEMAN, Mont. - The remains of Belgrade native Harold Haugland, a Korean War veteran, were returned to his family Thursday at Bozeman-Yellowstone International Airport, more than 60 years after his death.

Haugland was declared missing in action in 1950 when his unit returned from battle without him.

Haugland was 22 years old when the U.S. Army pronounced him dead in 1953, after returning prisoners of war could not account for him.

Recovery teams found the remains of at least five individuals in 2004 as part of the 36th Joint Recovery Operation.

Scientists from the Department of Defense used DNA analysis to identify Haugland, a process that took 13 years.

Haugland will be buried Saturday in Bozeman.
