Montana volleyball hoping to carry over momentum
MISSOULA, Mont. - Just like the UM football team, he Grizzly volleyball squad will get their season underway next Friday, August 29 th when they take on Cal Poly at home in the Montana Invitational tournament.
The Grizzlies are hopeful to carry over some momentum from last year's finish where Montana went 16-15 overall for just their second winning season in the last 13 years.
Montana even went on to defeat Northern Arizona in the first round of the Big Sky tournament, their first time winning a conference tournament game since 1996.
"It's a goal we want to reach again," said redshirt senior Natalie Jones. "We've tasted it and even though this is kind of a new, fresh team it's still something that's attainable and something you want to have happen again once you've touched that."
But it won't be an easy task to replicate that success for head coach Jerry Wagner who is beginning his ninth season at the helm. Montana lost four outstanding seniors and only has three upperclassmen on this year's roster.
"It's very exciting right now because we're at a spot where we really loved to finish where we did (last year)," said Wagner. "That group left us off at a good spot but we've got an exciting group going forward."
Montana will get the year underway at home against Cal Poly, Washington State and Wyoming in the Montana Invitational August 29 th and 30 th . The Grizzlies will start their conference season on the road in Ogden, Utah against Weber State on Thursday, September 25.
