UM's Colburn named Big Sky Player of the Week
MISSOULA, Mont. - For the second time in her career, Montana softball shortstop Delene Colburn was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday.
The Grizzlies' first weekend back on their home field was a welcome one for Colburn in the annual Griz Classic. In six games of action she hit .438, with 7 runs scored and 12 RBIs.
The junior from Washington started to heat up during Saturday's win over Seattle University. Colburn went 3-for-3, including one home run, 6 RBIs and three runs scored against the Redhawks.
The next day, Colburn stepped up to the plate against Seattle in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded facing a 6-2 deficit. She drove a ball to right field that fell just short of the fielder and rolled all the way to the warning track, clearing the bases and capping off an inside-the-park grand slam with a perfect slide just beating the throw at home plate. Montana went on to win that game 9-8 in nine innings.
Colburn has started every game for the Grizzlies this season. So far on the year she is batting .393 while leading thie league in home runs (9) and RBIs (30). She's also scored 23 runs and leads the conference in slugging percentage with a mark of .809.
The Griz softball team will be back in action this weekend with their first conference series of the year. That will be against North Dakota starting with a double header at 1 p.m. Saturday in Missoula.
