Yovetich breaks Mavs triples record
MISSOULA, Mont. - It was a weekend to remember for the Missoula Mavericks as not only did the AA squad win their annual Mavericks Memorial Tournament for the first time since 2012, but one player etched his name into the program's record book.
It was just a matter of when, not if, for Missoula's Nick Yovetich. Saturday against Bellevue, Washington, he recorded his 20th triple so far on the 2017 campaign. That breaks the all-time single season record for the Mavericks.
"With my speed I try to be aggressive," explained Yovetich on his success at collecting three-baggers. "So if I see a ball to the gap I try to lay it out on the line and if I get thrown out being aggressive then that's what it is."
Yovetich, who graduated from Missoula Big Sky this spring, will likely shatter that record as Missoula still has at least 20 games left to play in their regular season.
"Even to me it's a little crazy," said Yovetich. "It's something that I looked at earlier in the year. I'd gotten a few last year ... I looked through the yearbook and thought that's kind of doable. So it's definitely something I circled, thinking I can get this by the end of the year. But there were a few weekends where I'd notch up maybe four in a weekend and it was like this might be doable sooner than I thought."
"So I shot to do it as quick as possible because there's another triples record in there that hopefully we can reach by the end of the year."
Next year Yovetich will suit up for the San Francisco Dons to play college baseball in the WCC.
