Baby returned safe after car theft

Hungry Horse Chapel

A man is in custody and a baby is safe with his parents after a reported car theft and kidnapping Sunday morning in Hungry Horse.

A couple said they were going to church and had left their 2-year-old in the back seat of their car while they unloaded things into the Hungry Horse Chapel. They came outside to find their child and vehicle gone.

Officials say that's when an "attempt to locate" was broadcast for the vehicle.

The Flathead County sheriff’s office says they got the call just before 11 a.m. that a man dropped off a 2-year-old with construction workers and reportedly told the workers to “get him back to his parents.”

A Columbia Falls Police Officer saw the stolen vehicle in Columbia Falls near Super One Foods. Sheriff Chuck Curry said that officer tried to stop the vehicle when it crashed into another car.

The driver was uninjured and arrested. He’s identified as 22-year-old Isaiah Lee Maura, a Kalispell area transient.

He is charged with theft, kidnapping and criminal endangerment.
