This Friday, local architects, engineers and more will construct giant space-themed structures made entirely out of canned goods as part of a drive for the Missoula Food Bank.

The event is called CANdemonium, and it's happening at the Southgate Mall.

The structures will be left up until April 15 for public viewing.

The MFB&CC released the following:

CANdemonium is back at Southgate Mall, and Missoula Food Bank & Community Center says this year’s build will be out of this world.

Friday, April 8th, local architects, engineers, & businesses will gather at Southgate Mall to build giant, space-themed structures entirely from quality canned goods, with designs ranging from Wall-E to a UFO abducting canned beef. Each object is built from nonperishable food items, and all food is donated to the food bank after the event.

“CANdemonium is hands-on in nature,” explains Jessica Allred, Interim Co-Executive Director of Missoula Food Bank & Community Center, “Which helps the broader public understand just how much food we distribute during our busy spring season. The food donations from CANdemonium help us keep pace with need in our community. We couldn’t do this without our fantastic community partners who support our work in this fun way.”

Many teams participating in this year’s build have been long-time supporters of CANdemonium, including Sentinel Kiwanis who is partnered up with Cushing Terrell once again this year. Lisa Mecklenberg Jackson, Vice President of Sentinel Kiwanis, shared that her group is motivated by not just the fun, but the impact. “CANdemonium provides an excellent opportunity for service for my Sentinel Kiwanis Club and it is so much FUN to build the structure,” Lisa shared. “Knowing that all the cans will be used to help people facing food insecurity in our Missoula community makes the event even more enjoyable. My club looks forward to CANdemonium every year!”

Missoula Food Bank & Community Center encourages members of the community to visit Southgate Mall April 8 through the 15th to see the structures for themselves. This year’s event will be the biggest yet with 12 structures for viewing. Awards will be given to teams based on theme, structural integrity, and people’s choice. Missoula Food Bank & Community Center invites the public to vote for their favorite on the Missoula Food Bank & Community Center Facebook & Instagram pages, as well as by donation.
