Community activists get rare look at former Smurfit-Stone pulp mill
Thursday afternoon the Frenchtown-Smurfit Stone community advisory group went on a tour of the former paper mill with Environmental Protection Agency officials.
The current owner of the mill, M2 Green, did not want the tour to walk the grounds too much because of the potential danger. But the group was able to get off the bus to view significant sites.
The main concern for the advisory group is to see what the EPA is testing and how the tests are turning out.
Officials say some of the groundwater is contaminated with metals including arsenic, copper, and manganese -- all byproducts of paper processing.
Their hope is to determine which areas need to be cleaned up.
The latest water samples were collected by the EPA for testing in June. Officials say the results from those tests will be released soon.
