HELENA, Mont. — Montana and Idaho wildlife officials say they separately captured and killed two grizzly bears for killing chickens and sheep.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials said Monday a 3-year-old, 195-pound male grizzly repeatedly broke into chicken coops and killed numerous chickens over several days before it was captured on Thursday north of Kalispell.
Officials concluded the bear posed a risk to public safety and euthanized it after consulting with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
About 150 miles away in northern Idaho, officials say they euthanized a 240-pound male grizzly Saturday after it killed seven sheep.
Officials say the same bear was captured in 2018 and relocated to the Cabinet Mountains near the Idaho-Montana border after harassing livestock and raiding orchards.
Grizzly bears in the Lower 48 states are protected as a threatened species.
