MDT prepares for winter as weather changes
The Montana Department of Transportation trained its seasonal workers Thursday as wintry weather made its way to valley floors overnight.
Maintenance director Steve Felix said full-time crews have been busy plowing and treating icy roads, especially over mountain passes, but they have not yet had to plow in valley locations.
Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Wade Palmer said there has been an increase in snow related accidents in Missoula County over the past couple of days. He said there were several crashes, slide-offs and hazards across the area.
“At one point this morning I looked at the board, and there were probably 10 incidents waiting for officers to respond,” Palmer said.
Felix and Palmer gave similar tips for driving in snowy conditions -- give yourself ample time to get to your destination, slow down, be aware of rapidly changing road conditions and drive within your capabilities.
