Many Missoulians have been struggling to find affordable housing amidst rising home costs and inflation.

A new year brings about the fruition of many housing developments that we are seeing pop up in Missoula.

Two large affordable housing projects will be completed in 2023. The Trinity Apartments are a collaboration between Homeword and Missoula Housing Authority. This project has 2 locations, one on Mullan and Broadway and the other one Cooley and Burns Street.

The Cooley Street location is nearly completed. It offers 72 units and is leasing now. Tenants will begin moving in around the middle of this month. We spoke with the executive director of Homeword Andrea Davis about what makes these apartments unique.

“They’re mostly larger apartments there. Two, three and four-bedroom apartments, that’s not something we see built in our market very often. And these are rent restricted, meaning they’re affordable to people that are earning anywhere between 12 and 20 dollars per hour depending on your household size.”

The Mullan location offers 130 units with a broad range of home types to accommodate varying incomes and household sizes. It includes 100 workforce affordable apartments based on income and household size. Thirty units are designated for people who are currently unhoused or that have been chronically unhoused for more than three years.

“The idea with those 30 apartments is that they are permanent, supportive housing. There is on-site wrap around services available 24 hours a day, we’re working with community partners including Partnership Health Center and the Poverello Center with the permanent supportive homes to make sure that folks have the support they need to continue to stay in their home and remain in their home,” says Davis.

The Mullan Street location will also offer a navigation center that will serve the entire community as a resource for anyone needing assistance with housing.

The Missoula Housing Authority also has another project in the works located along Otis Street and Scott Street.

“In addition to the Trinity Apartments, the housing authority is also proud to bring the Villagio Apartments online. That’ll be 200 units split between two buildings, one opening in May and one opening in late August,” explains executive director of Missoula Housing Authority Sam Oliver.

Sam also tells us there is one important distinction for housing applicants to be aware of is that for those looking to apply for housing with the Trinity Apartments, you should contact Homeword.

For those looking to apply at the Villagio Apartments you should contact Missoula Housing Authority.

With the broad range of income and household types available, the Missoula Housing Authority and Homeword encourage anyone in need of affordable housing to apply now. People interested in applying can visit the Missoula Housing Authority's Facebook page to access waiting lists and more information.
