Missoula mayor cancels sidewalk project

Missoula Mayor John Engen just announced a sidewalk and curb project scheduled for the Slant Street area in Missoula will be canceled.

We’ve been following this story for the last week. Property owners told us they received estimated bills from the city for improved sidewalks and curbs. The bills ranged from the $3 to close to $40,000.

In a news release, the mayor said he’ll work with the Missoula City Council and City staff to review the master sidewalk program and look for alternative methods for paying for new sidewalks.

“Sidewalks are an important part of our transportation system, and we need more of them, but we can’t break the banks of adjacent property owners to build them,” Engen said. “We’ve been working with an imperfect system for a long time, and the Council has worked hard to temper costs, but the price of the program is out of hand. We need to create a better, more equitable method for building and paying for sidewalks.”
