LIVINGSTON, Mont. — A new fire retardant is making its way into Montana stores.
The product is a liquid spray that homeowners can apply to their property that aims to prevent fire from taking hold.
California-based Komodo Fire Systems makes the retardant, which can be applied with a do-it-yourself kit or by a professional.
The company said the product is eco-friendly and non-toxic. Their idea is for the retardant to stay in one place for several months, with four inches of cumulative rainfall would wash it away.
The company's goal is to get the approval for air tankers this year.
"Anything that you're going to be putting out on a wide scale, over land, you're going to have potential exposure into waterways, into the soil, into people's properties. And so it's very important that we don't introduce any kind of suspect or potential dangerous material," said Shawn Sahbari, president and CEO of Komodo Fire Systems.
Do-it-yourself spray kits are for sale at Ace Hardware in Livingston.
Komodo Fire Systems are working to expand their product within the state.
