BUTTE, Mont. — Now that the weather is warming up, Butte officials say to take precautions when it comes to the melted snow.
Director of emergency management Dan Dennehy tells NBC Montana flooding can cause costly damage to your home if you’re not prepared.
"If you have furniture or electronics in your basement, and that's being flooded, that adds up fairly quickly. It gets into hundreds and thousands of dollars fairly quickly,” said Dennehy.
He says there are some things you can do to prepare:
If you have a sump pump in your basement, make sure it's working.
Make sure your window wells and culverts under your driveway are clear of snow.
If you see storm drains in your neighborhood that are blocked or frozen, report them to county maintenance.
"If you take time now to prevent some of those things, it's very low cost. Those steps in the short term might be hard, but in the long run it could save you a lot of money in the future,” Dennehy said.
He says maintenance crews will provide free sandbags next week for residents to help them save money on supplies.
