Recently hired Helena teacher with assault record resigns

Helena Public Schools officials say they will review hiring policies following the resignation of a recently hired teacher, who was previously sentenced for misdemeanor assault against a student in Missoula.

The Independent Record reports Dan Kucera resigned Thursday after he was hired to teach business at Helena's Capital High School.

Kucera was given a 6-month suspended sentence in 2005 after pleading no contest. He was accused of putting a 17-year-old high school student in a head lock and sucking on his neck.

Kucera says his action was a mistake and was punished for it 13 years ago. He says he felt like Helena school district "strong-armed" him into resigning.

Superintendent Tyler Ream says he couldn't speak to what happened during the hiring process, but the district will make changes.
