BOZEMAN, Mont. — Tuesday, voters in 12 counties will decide on local-option marijuana sales taxes.
Residents will consider adding a 3% local-option sales tax for all recreational marijuana products and a 3% local-option sales tax for all medical marijuana products.
The state already imposes a 20% tax on recreational marijuana and a 4% tax on medical marijuana.
“We do want to support the community, but at the same time, that extra 3%, when we’re already taxed at 20%, could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” said Collective Elevation co-owner Adam Arnold.
If voters pass the local-option taxes, the Gallatin County Commission agreed to spend the county’s portion of the money on mental health services in the area.
In Powell County, the local-option sales tax applies to both medical and non-medical marijuana.
In Yellowstone and Granite counties, voters will decide whether to ban recreational cannabis dispensaries in their communities.
