Whitefish ready for ski season
Winter is around the corner and, with it, skiers and a boost for the Whitefish economy.
Last year Whitefish Mountain Resort saw a record-breaking 382,000 skier visits, resort PR Manager Riley Polumbus said, calling it the “biggest year ever.”
This season is shaping up to be another big one. Polumbus said the resort has sold 10,000 season passes so far -- an all-time high.
A big season isn’t just good for the resort, it’s good for local Whitefish businesses.
“It’s very important to the survival of, I would say, 75 to 80 percent of the businesses here,” Whitefish Chamber of Commerce executive director Kevin Gartland said.
Whitefish Mountain Resort opens to skiers on Dec. 6, and Gartland said tourism begins picking up in mid-December.
“We always have a great holiday season here, we always have great snow here,” he said.
A few inches of snow fell at the resort on Big Mountain on Wednesday -- a sign ski season is coming, Polumbus said.
“We’re just looking forward to seeing what happens,” she said. “Right now we’re very excited to see some snow on the ground, at this point.”
