MISSOULA, Mont. — It took a community effort to rescue four horses from a frozen pond near Patrick Creek south of Kalispell on Monday.
Upon arrival, South Kalispell Fire Department crews found the four horses had fallen through the pond's ice.
Staff from Rebecca Farm, along with crews from local fire departments and Flathead County Animal Control joined the rescue effort and were able to pull all four animals from the pond and transport them for veterinary care.
Alexis Langlois, who owns one of the horses, told us the young horses were playing near or on the ice and fell through.
"It was an amazing day, the community really pulled together for this one," she told NBC Montana. "Neighbors, first responders, police, ranch employees."
Langlois said the horses were in the water for about three hours, and it took crews about 30 minutes each to pull the horses from the icy pond.
She said the horses are doing well now, with strong vitals, looking bright-eyed and affectionate.
